Folfirinox

FOLFIRINOX is an acronym for a group of chemotherapeutic schemes approved in oncology and used for treating pancreatic cancer.

The classical FOLFIRINOX scheme consists of:

(FOL)inic acid, calcium salt (leucovorin);
(F)luorouracil – antimetabolite, pyrimidine antagonist;
(IRI)notecan – topoisomerase inhibitor;
(OX)aliplatin

This scheme appeared in 2010 as a new treatment method for patients with metastatic pancreatic cancer. One study published in the New England Journal of Medicine showed that the FOLFIRINOX regimen demonstrated the most significant increase in survival rate among patients with advanced stages of pancreatic cancer (among all Phase III clinical trials studying this pathology). Patients who got FOLFIRINOX regimen lived on average 4 months longer than patients with standard monotherapy with Gemcitabine (11.1 months in comparison with 6.8 months).
