Breast puncture is carried out on an outpatient basis at the partner clinics and doesn’t require any specific preparations. Before the puncture, the patient undergoes ultrasound, mammography, ductography, and cystography to determine the location and size of a pathological focus. The next step in the diagnostic process will be a puncture and the collection of some tissue for histological examination.
Puncture should not be performed just before or during menstruation; 7–14 days before or after the period is considered optimal. One week before the procedure, blood-thinning medicines (aspirin, warfarin) and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs should be canceled. One day before the puncture, it is better to avoid alcohol.
The area of a puncture is treated with local anaesthetics to reduce discomfort, although in some cases the procedure is absolutely painless due to a very thin needle.
